A giant runner’s playground: SYDNEY, Australia

There are not too many places in the world that can even touch the picturesque scenery of Sydney, Australia. Coming from the deep south of Alabama and moving to Down Under was like a dream.

When I left Alabama, and then finished college in Tennessee I decided that I would never be landlocked again. I spent summers in Hawaii throughout college, and then six months after and then decided I wanted to country hop. Australia seemed like a perfect fit considering 85% of Aussies live on the coast. The lifestyle is very laid back, and everyone seems to live active, healthy lifestyles. I think this has something to do with being around water. I literally pinch myself every day I live here, rain or shine – it is always stunning!

Being an avid runner living at Manly Beach in Sydney is like a giant runner’s playground. I can walk out my door and run by the beach and watch the surf, run by the harbor and watch the ferries and the boats, or run trails that lead to breathtaking views of the water and the city. One of my favourite runs is from Manly to Sydney along the coastal trail, up the Spit Bridge and then running over the Harbour Bridge is always a treat – even in the winter in the pouring down rain.

Same goes on the bicycle, cycling down to Church Point, up through Akuna Bay and then to enjoy the incredible view from West Head never gets old. Sydney is becoming a very bicycle friendly city and also Melbourne thrives on the fact that they cultivate such an amazing cycling culture. I will say that my all time favourite ride is down the Great Ocean Road – it has to be one of the most scenic rides in the world.

It is hard to lose motivation living in such a beautiful place and luckily most people share the same lifestyle as Manly Beach’s busiest time is 6am! You honestly feel guilty if you sleep past 8am. There is no better way to start the day other than watching the sunrise over the ocean! Sydney is a very special place and I keep my fingers crossed that YOU will soon end up here too!
