Mental power: Why goals are so important
Without goals, you are like a rowboat without oars – you will either achieve your goal by accident or not at all. Every goal gives us a direction in which to go. Successful people share something in common: They know what they want and where they are going – in their career, their fitness training, or in their private lives.
What’s your next goal look like?
Only when you know your goal, can you work towards it in a dedicated manner. Goals not only lead to greater success, but help us persevere longer and stay focused in difficult situations. Perhaps you are familiar with the S.M.A.R.T. method of goal setting: Each letter stands for a different criterion of good goals. Your goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. But what does that mean in practice? When you think of your goal, it must feel intense and right. The more worthwhile the goal is to you, the more energy you can draw from it. Therefore, you should set a goal that is very important to you – this will motivate you to approach it in a completely different way. Set yourself high goals, but don’t set them so high that you can’t achieve them with maximum effort. On the other hand, if you set your sights too low, all you will achieve are minor successes. Express your goals in a positive way and put them down in writing. That forces you to organize your thoughts and documents your goals.
What are your values?
In order to achieve your goals, they must be in line with your personal values. We won’t pursue goals long that do not align with our values – we will give up too soon. If your fitness, career or personal goals match your values, it speeds up your decisions and makes you happier and more successful. Your goals are shaped by your education and life experience. Desirable ideals could include, for instance, adventure, friends, enthusiasm, happiness, security, victory or a zest for life. There are very few people who can clearly state their goals – be one of them! Write down what is important to you in different areas of your life, like health or social life, and prioritize your list. Once you are aware of your values, many things will be easier and the goals for your next adventure will be clearer!
