Dive Into Swimming: National Swim A Lap Day

June 24th is Swim A Lap Day, perfect timing as summer is now among us. Even if you think it is a made up or insignificant holiday, it’s a great excuse to go for a refreshing dip or even learn to swim for the first time on Swim A Lap Day. Swimming is a great low-impact, relatively injury free form of exercise and for all ages. Whether you are 5 or 95 you can still enjoy swimming a lap on a regular basis or every now and then.

Swimming was something that I often did as a kid with my friends. I remember how much fun we had swimming in house pools, public pools or even at the lake or ocean. As I grew older, I started swimming as a sport in high school and was introduced to the individual aspect of swimming and achieving a personal best. Now I swim for exercise or to cool off from the heat. It’s really something you can do for a lifetime with your friends, family or even alone.

In addition to swimming for fun, one should also learn to swim for safety. What if you accidentally fall into a pool or go a bit too far into a lake or ocean? The fear of drowning shouldn’t be the main reason to learn to swim, but it’s really a beneficial skill that can improve your fitness and even save your life.

Celebrate today and dive, or cannon ball, into the pool and get in some swimming. What do you prefer: backstroke, freestyle, butterfly or breaststroke? Happy Swim A Lap Day.
