Run with Your Smartwatch, Not Your Phone: Android Wear 2.0
Google has recently presented Android Wear 2.0, a new software for your Android smartwatch focusing on fitness and communication. Among the new features, smartwatch apps now function without a smartphone connection. And Runtastic is one of the first apps available for Android Wear 2.0. If your watch has GPS, you can soon leave your phone behind on your next run, walk or hike and listen to your favorite music on Bluetooth headphones.
What does this mean in detail?
If you have a new smartwatch with Android Wear 2.0, or have updated your watch to the latest version, you can install the Runtastic app directly on your wrist device. Just go to the Google Play Store on your watch and search for the Runtastic app. You can find it in the “Health & Fitness” category.
Android Wear 2.0 apps run directly on your watch: installation takes place on your wrist device, the connected smartphone – depending on the watch – simply provides the Internet connection. One big advantage of Android Wear 2.0 is that the iPhone experience is much better than in the past. This means you can use your favorite apps to motivate yourself to get more active. For instance, you can display the distance you have run and listen to your favorite music at the same time. And if your watch is equipped with GPS, you can even leave your phone at home while you run.
Your Runtastic app for Android Wear 2.0
Getting started: start the Runtastic app on your Android Wear watch. You can start your activity by pushing the START button. Would you like to change the Activity Type, enable/disable the Auto Pause or add a heart rate belt instead of using the heart rate monitor installed on your watch? Then click the down arrow or swipe up on the screen.
Using the app:
Once you have started your activity and begun running, you will see the duration, distance and your heart rate on the screen of your smartwatch. You can select the most important stats for you and personalize the screen by pressing down and holding on the value you would like to change.
Do you need to stop for a minute on your run, or would you like to take a short break while hiking? No problem. Just press the Pause button on the screen. To stop the activity, swipe up and tap the Stop button. Your activity will end and you will see the route ran as well as other details like duration, distance, calories burned and much more. You can also select how you felt and the type of terrain you ran on.
If you have a smartwatch with an Internet connection, your activity will be saved and uploaded to Runtastic.com. If your watch is not connected to the Internet, the activity will be uploaded to your smartphone.
