How the Balance App Helped Michaela Lose 20 kg (45 lb)
Many people love food. That’s nothing unusual. I love to eat, too. And I used to love unhealthy foods. So much so that one day I weighed more than 100 kg (220 lb). As a trained pastry chef, I cook and bake for a living, and I’m a huge fan of Austrian food. Cooking and eating is simply my passion – but it has also meant that I’ve struggled with my weight ever since I was young. The stress at work only further increased my craving for fried foods, sweets and sugary drinks. But 100 kg (220 lb) on the scale was a first for me! I had reached the point where all I could think was: STOP. It can’t go on this way. I want and have to make a change.
As chance would have it, a friend of mine asked me to test a new product in advance. An app that you can use to track your food and meals and thus get a good overview of the calories you are consuming. At first, I was skeptical. But then I thought: Okay, I’ve got nothing to lose. I’ll simply give it a try. I entered my current weight and my ideal weight in the Balance app and then received my recommended daily calorie intake. The app also showed me how many carbohydrates, protein and fat I should eat every day in order to reach my goal. I tried to stick to my recommended daily number of calories as best as I could.
I learned to listen to my body
Every day, I tracked what and how much I ate with the Balance app. Luckily for me, as a chef, it was easy to estimate amounts since I work with grams and milliliters every day at work. I got in the habit of entering my meals in the food diary right after I finished eating. At first, it took some getting used to, but soon it just became part of my regular routine. Things began to change once I started tracking my food. I finally became aware of what I was actually putting in my body every day. Soon, I began to eat healthier automatically (or maybe unconsciously) because I had developed a feel for what is healthy and what is not. Plus, I cut out unhealthy snacks (calories bombs) between meals. Most of the time, these are just full of empty calories.
The Balance app is easy to use and has helped me to eat more consciously by showing me what my meals really consist of. It has also given me a clearer picture of my eating habits. Through it, I learned to listen to my body and rediscovered my natural feelings of hunger. It has also helped me to learn how many calories I need per day and how many I am actually eating.
Nutrition is (almost) everything in weight loss
In addition to tracking my food, I used the “Weight Loss” plan in the app. I received useful tips on what foods to avoid and which I should eat more often. It also included a handy shopping list and practical dos and don’ts. And the best thing about it was that I never went hungry. I always felt full and never low on energy. That’s probably because while I was eating healthier, I wasn’t eating less. I simply replaced the unhealthy foods with healthy foods. To be honest, apart from my job, I didn’t exercise more than usual. That also taught me that nutrition plays a major role (perhaps the biggest) in weight loss.
With food tracking, I lost more than 20 kg (45 lb). I can only say that the app was a big help in losing weight. It really motivates you! It is a great feeling to watch your weight go down slowly, but steadily. I would never have thought I could lose so much weight without dieting. And I’m happy I got the chance to test the app in advance.
Today, I feel great. I can finally buy pants in sizes 38 and 40 (8 and 10). I used to wear a 44 and 46 (14 and 16), which made shopping frustrating at times. I often couldn’t buy things that I wanted because they didn’t have it in my size. These days, I enjoy spending the day at the mall.
Now, I know I can achieve anything!
I’ve also noticed that I’ve become a lot more self-confident. A year ago, I decided to start my own business, and I think that my weight loss helped me to truly believe in myself. I’ve learned that you can achieve anything if you just believe in it.
I also started running a couple of months ago. This has helped me to further enhance my physical well-being. I would still like to lose another 5 kg (11 lb), but I think I’m well on the way. I can only encourage everyone to try the Balance app. You’ve got nothing to lose – except a few extra kilos.
