On May 27, technology executive and national running champion, Scott Dunlap, became the new General Manager of Runtastic, one of the world’s leading companies in the digital health and fitness space, with its headquarters in Pasching, Austria — a perfect fit for the Austrian app developer.
Scott Dunlap (50) heads up the company’s leadership team in Linz since May 27, 2019 together with co-founders Alfred Luger and Christian Kaar, as well as Mathis Gerkensmeyer. The US citizen now reports to Scott Zalaznik, who is leading adidas' Digital division. Scott Dunlap succeeds Runtastic co-founder and former CEO Florian Gschwandtner, who left the company by his own request at the end of 2018.
With more than 20 years of experience developing digital products and strategies for large corporations and start-ups, Scott Dunlap is the perfect fit to take Runtastic to the next level. As a former product and marketing executive at high growth companies such as Brilliant, PAX Labs (JUUL Labs), PayPal, Opsware, NearbyNow, and E.piphany, he has helped lead many companies to 100 million customers and added over $30 billion in market value. His role as the CEO and founder of NearbyNow in particular helped develop many mobile apps to #1 positions for top global brands.
“Scott Dunlap was our dream candidate: he unites all attributes we’ve been looking for for our new General Manager,” says Alfred Luger, COO and co-founder of Runtastic. “As Runtastic founders we couldn’t imagine a better fit to lead our company. We’re very proud that the opportunity to head up Runtastic was compelling enough to bring Scott to Linz.”
The enthusiastic trail runner has won multiple national championships at numerous distances, including marathon, 50 miles and 100 miles, and holds an MBA from California’s Stanford University Graduate School of Business. His passion for health and fitness, combined with his business acumen underscore the vision that adidas and Runtastic share — through sport, we have the power to change lives. That sport also has the power to change the world is evident in Run For The Oceans, a joint initiative between adidas and Runtastic, which took place for the third time in 2019: more than 1.5 million people around the globe joined the challenge in the Runtastic app, using their collected kilometers to ensure a 1.5 million USD contribution was made to fight marine plastic pollution. And Scott Dunlap was, of course, one of those participants, as he sees the collaboration between adidas and Runtastic as a huge opportunity.
“The talent level of the employees at Runtastic is extraordinary, as is their passion,” says Mr. Dunlap. “When you combine these with the vision and global reach of the adidas brand, the opportunity is huge. I am looking forward to working with the team to define the next generation of digital sports.”
With currently more than 240 employees, the former start-up Runtastic will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year. Runtastic CTO and co-founder Christian Kaar who, together with his co-founders, actively supports and develops Austrian start-ups, is looking forward to sharing the experience of “Silicon Valley import” Scott Dunlap with other Austrian founders: “We’re convinced that, with Scott Dunlap’s leadership and experience, Runtastic can provide exciting insights and valuable, first-hand tips to Austrian start-ups and help them thrive.“
