Nutrition Is Key, as Runtastic Launches Its Latest App, Balance
The new food diary app broadens Runtastic’s healthy horizons to include a focus on nutrition.
Today Runtastic—a leader in the digital health and fitness space that offers an innovative portfolio of apps, products and services for tracking and managing health and fitness data—announced the release of the newest member of its app family, Runtastic Balance. The food tracking app will expand Runtastic’s focus on health and wellness to include an emphasis on nutrition. Featuring an extensive food tracking library, detailed nutritional information and eating plans optimized for individual weight goals, Balance aims to raise users’ awareness about daily habits and, in turn, encourage them to make healthy food choices.
While Runtastic has traditionally placed its main focus on fitness as the foundation of a healthy lifestyle, Runtastic Balance will engage a new, expanded audience. Although the Runtastic and Results apps offer fitness opportunities for beginning and experienced athletes alike, not everyone is capable of achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle through sports and fitness alone.“We have built such a strong community of users that love to use our fitness-based apps to take control of their health, but there is a massive group of people for whom that isn’t a realistic or healthy option,” says Runtastic CMO Stephanie Peterson. “What’s the solution? Find a way to make a healthy lifestyle accessible to all by building a nutrition-focused product to help raise awareness about what we eat and how it plays such a crucial role in our health and happiness. We all have to eat, right? Why shouldn’t we eat to be the best we can be? That’s what Balance encourages its users to do.”This increased knowledge and awareness will help users make changes in their day-to-day life that guide them toward achievable goals, ideally forming habits that stick in the long-term. Food Tracking: More Than Just Calorie Counting Balance aims to offer users a full range of tools to set and achieve healthy goals. One of the most basic ways to raise awareness of daily habits is to observe calorie intake. Balance makes food tracking as simple as possible for users. Tracking and recording meals and snacks in the food diary only take a few minutes a day, thanks to the highly-intuitive search function and extensive database of nearly 600,000 localized foods. Additionally, the detailed nutritional information provided about tracked foods should serve to educate users about what they eat, hopefully leading to healthier choices for sustainable success. For users already familiar with the Runtastic cooking app, Runtasty, the recipes included in the app will also be searchable in the Balance food tracking library for added convenience. Plan for SuccessThe Balance food diary is designed to be used in combination with an eating plan targeted toward achieving a particular goal. Available plans include weight loss, muscle building and energy enhancement, among others. Based on information provided by the user, Balance will calculate ideal daily intake, including total calories and a nutrient ratio for carbs, protein and fat. Food tracking, ideal intake and chosen plan will integrate seamlessly to update values as meals and snacks are entered, offering the user an overview of their eating habits throughout the day. Balance plans also offer useful suggestions about certain foods which are optimal for achieving the user’s goal, creating an shopping list of sorts to encourage users to have healthy choices on hand. Again, users are encouraged to evaluate how simple changes in daily habits, such as choosing snacks and ingredients more wisely, can lead to lifelong changes for the better. Find Your BalanceAccording to a 2014 study by the WHO, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these, over 600 million were obese. The need to address nutrition as a key component of overall health is more pressing than ever. A lack of awareness or knowledge about healthy eating habits contributes directly to the rapid spread of this preventable epidemic. Runtastic saw the need to address this issue of preventability and created Balance to provide an audience searching for a food tracking tool with an easy-to-use nutrition app. By keeping users informed and aware, Balance acts as a guide and motivator toward a healthier lifestyle in the long term.“Runtastic has always believed that everyone was capable of a healthy lifestyle, and has encouraged its users thus far to use fitness as the means to get there. Balance takes a different approach and incorporates not only the Runtastic apps’ current user base, but also welcomes a whole new generation of Runtastic users to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle with balanced nutrition as the foundation,” explains Runtastic CEO Florian Gschwandtner. What’s next for Balance? In true startup fashion, Runtastic is never satisfied with the status quo. A diverse team of experts worked tirelessly to bring Balance to life and their work doesn’t stop with its release. As with all Runtastic apps, Balance will be continuously expanded and improved to ensure an optimal experience for all users. With an ever-growing food database and new features already planned, Balance will offer more and more tools to make user goals a reality in the weeks, months and years to come.
