adidas x Parley Run for the Oceans Returns with an Exciting New Twist
Runtastic, adidas, and Parley for the Oceans have teamed up again, but this year, to raise both money and awareness for marine plastic pollution
Following the success of last year’s first ever Run for the Oceans, Runtastic, adidas, and Parley for the Oceans decided to take the project to the next level. The 2018 adidas x Parley Run for the Oceans will feature a monetary component with the motto “Every kilometer counts.” By simply joining the Run for the Oceans group in the Runtastic app, every kilometer run and tracked between 8 June and 8 July will be matched with a $1 donation from adidas to fight marine plastic pollution (up to $1 million USD). To raise additional awareness and support, the newly released adidas Runners digital platform on Runtastic will allow local communities around the globe to participate in live events and show their support for this worthy cause.
Kicking off on World Oceans Day, the 2018 adidas x Parley Run for the Oceans digital campaign will take place from 8 June – 8 July 2018. During this time users can run to raise both awareness and money for saving our oceans from the threat of marine plastic pollution. For those interested in contributing mileage to this important cause, signing up can be easily done within the Runtastic app or at adidas.com/parley.
The campaign will kick-off with a live event on 8 June in Los Angeles. The event will see runners, ocean ambassadors, influencers, and special guests take to the streets of LA for a very special nighttime event intended to raise awareness and spark discourse in an effort to create solutions and improve the health of the oceans. After that, anyone worldwide can participate in the month-long global digital campaign by joining the Run for the Oceans group in the Runtastic app and tracking their running sessions. In addition to the digital campaign, a number of live events will be hosted around the world in conjunction with local adidas Runners communities.
The Parley Ocean Plastic Program, recipient of the money raised during Run for the Oceans, is helping to turn threat into thread by upcycling plastic waste from coastal communities and beaches, and turning it into quality sportswear. It doesn’t stop there – the Parley Ocean School initiative is helping to educate the next generation about the beauty and magic of the oceans, and also why protecting them is so important. Raising awareness amongst the youth is critical to finding solutions in the future.
“Raising awareness of the marine plastic pollution problem was a great first step. But we knew this year we needed to really contribute to the solution in an even more meaningful way,” says Runtastic CEO & co-founder, Florian Gschwandtner. “The ability to back up our physical efforts with a financial contribution is a huge advancement for an already worthy and important cause.”
The 2018 Run for the Oceans is a continuation of the collaboration between Runtastic, Parley for the Oceans, and adidas, who are amongst many powerful stakeholders working together to transform marine plastic pollution into high-performance sportswear. The partnership aims to set new industry standards and drive eco-innovation towards long-term solutions through the Parley AIR Strategy: Avoid, Intercept, Redesign. Inspired by the fragility of the oceans, adidas Running will reveal limited-release UltraBOOST Parley and UltraBOOST X shoes, fusing performance-oriented footwear technology with progressive eco-innovation. Featuring an energy‐return BOOST™ midsole and 95% Parley Ocean Plastic™ Primeknit upper, each pair prevents approx. 11 plastic bottles from the possibility of entering our oceans. If you’d like to further contribute to the cause, these shoes will be available online from 8 June and in stores worldwide from 27 June. Find out more here.
“Starting this new global running movement for the oceans last year was just the beginning. Our big goal is to inspire people around the world not only to run for the oceans, but also to change their shopping habits and avoid single-use plastics wherever possible. Every step counts, and if we all take just a few steps in the right direction, we will reach our goal to make things better,” says Chris Thaller, Head of Creative Projects at Runtastic.
