Details

adidas Running is encouraging runners of all levels around the globe to sprint towards the end of 2020 with a 7K race under their belt.

The New Year’s Eve Run & Revive virtual race will take place in all adidas Running countries. Previous races have gathered more than 128,000 participants for a single event worldwide. adidas Running app users can sign up now and have plenty of time to prepare, pick their favorite route and start training.

Runners on December 31 will track their race with the app and once they run a distance within 6.9 – 8 km, they’ll be rewarded with a virtual badge.

Virtual racing has meant that athletes and new runners can get back their competitive fire after their race plans were dashed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alexandru Corneschi, captain of the adidas Runners crew in Bucharest, Romania said: “I can say that [virtual racing] is completely different because we lack the cheering from the sidelines, but also the competitive spirit of the other runners.

“However, for the period we are going through, it is an alternative for those who want to test their limits and a motivation to stay fit for running.”

Corneshi has participated in two adidas Running virtual races.  The last race, on November 8, was a global race to test a 10 km distance.

6,000 miles away, adidas Runtastic ambassador and adidas Runners Los Angeles member Emma Backshall set off for an early morning 10K race.

Though she ran a portion of her 10K race with a friend, the pandemic put a pause on running and competing with her crew. “[With virtual racing] it’s more of an accomplishment to finish those miles because it’s tough to get up and do it by yourself,” she said.

Campaign Manager for Running Stefanie Endfellner said she wanted to recreate the excitement of finishing the year on a runner’s high, virtually. “We’re really excited to see how it turns out and how our users choose to finish off what has perhaps been one of the most challenging years of their lives,” Endfellner said.

Endfellner said she and the regional marketing teams took inspiration from other NYE races like ones in her native Austria and the 15 km Saint Silvester Road Race in São Paulo, Brazil.

The race is linked to the adidas Training app’s Revive and Thrive campaign, a six-week-long campaign that encourages people to enjoy the holistic and re-energizing benefits of fitness after a difficult year.

App Features

Without the swell of energy from crowds and celebrations with loved-ones after, adidas Running’s Product, Design and Content teams found new and innovative ways to keep runners motivated and excited to take part.

Head of Product Diogo Ribeira Novaes said there are plenty of app features to keep the runner engaged throughout race leadup and on the day.

“I think that the best part of the virtual race is the whole experience around participation. You get push messages to remind you. If you choose to, you can get some audio guidance and it gives you feedback during the race which is quite nice.

“Once you’re done, you get a badge and you can share [your results] with everyone,” Novaes said.

The social aspect of the adidas Running app is an important motivator. This can mean racing with a friend or using the leaderboard on the app to see how your social connections are performing.

“Even virtually, we keep each other accountable,” Backshall said.

Backshall also said the voice coach feature helps her with mile splitting, checking to see how she’s pacing for each mile and how much she should speed up by. “I think that’s super-motivating because you can keep running and maybe work on negative-splitting your next mile.”

For September and November the virtual races drew in 128,000 and 123,000 participants, respectively, from around the world.

Novaes said the response from runners to the races have been “overwhelmingly positive”.

He said: “For our user feedback survey, we had 94% of people saying that running the race was a positive experience for them.”
