Details

On September 29, 2020, employees from adidas Runtastic and the United Nations Environment Programme ran a socially distanced 5k as part of the Run Wild Challenge.

Run Wild is a virtual running Challenge in the adidas Running app done in partnership with Internet of Elephants, UNEP, and three conservation organizations to raise awareness and advocate for threatened species. With an aim of mobilizing more than 1 million participants for the global movement, over 800,000 runners have joined the Challenge so far.

The adidas Runtastic and UNEP team run took place in the Donaupark in Vienna, Austria in front of the United Nations office buildings. Twenty-five runners met and collected kilometers in their virtual race against one of three endangered species– Pamoja the pangolin, Tendrel the tiger, or Adjany the elephant.

“To get the general public involved in topics like biodiversity conservation, we not only need to raise awareness and share scientific facts, we also need to involve people on an emotional level. Run Wild achieves both in a very engaging way. Also, by forming innovative partnerships with big brands like adidas Runtastic, UNEP can share its knowledge of global biodiversity with a new audience.” – Matthias Jurek, Programme Management Officer, Vienna Office, UN Environment Programme

“For me, it’s important to take part in collective actions that raise awareness about wildlife protection, and Run Wild does that in a really innovative way. The challenge puts office workers like me in touch with what’s happening in our environment, blurring the lines between humans and wildlife so we can better understand what wild animals are going through.” – Elodie Broussard, President and Co-founder of the UN Vienna – Sustainable and Innovative Initiatives Club

Through Run Wild, participants will not only learn about threatened species, they will also show their support for critical policy change at the upcoming UN General Assembly Biodiversity Summit. The summit calls on Heads of State to put forward ambitious action that will address biodiversity loss. Find out more about Run Wild in our media center
