What Is Run For The Oceans?

Did you know that marine plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental issues in the world today? 150 – that’s the number of million tons of plastic in our oceans worldwide.

With the Run For The Oceans campaign in 2021, adidas Runtastic and Parley’s Global Cleanup Network came together to fight and raise awareness for this environmental problem.

1 challenge = 5M total participants

Together we want to save the oceans! 5 million runners worldwide came together to collect kilometers and raise awareness for marine plastic pollution.

The motto: 1 km run = the equivalent weight of 10 plastic bottles cleaned-up (up to 500.000 pounds)

Whether running, treadmill, virtual running, trail running, plogging, walking, nordic walking, and wheelchair activities – all of these activities contributed to completing the challenge in the adidas Running app.

About Parley’s Global Cleanup Network

In the year 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans. That is the terrifying conclusion of numerous experts.

This is exactly where Parley’s Global Cleanup Network comes in: The initiative works to protect marine environments from plastic pollution and other threats. The cleanup collaborations remove plastic waste from beaches, remote islands, rivers, mangroves, and high seas, and intercept ocean-bound plastics in coastal communities.

Plastic pollution is a global problem that can only be combated long term with the help of a large number of active people. To build support for Run For The Oceans, adidas Runtastic teamed up with several partners: In collaboration with Polar, Suunto, Garmin, Zwift und Kinomap, a total of +56 million kilometers were collected – what a success!
